Common Time

The days speed ahead,
tumbling and rolling one after the other.
Suddenly the calendar turns its last sheet over.
A stop in schedules, activities, responsibilities.
A short reprieve from the traffic jam of life.
Reflection, contemplation, renewal.
Barely begin when the master clock starts its count down.
Stop for one more calming breath.
Time to start.

A New Year

The day is new and unbroken.
No forgotten promises,
No priority problems.

Well intended plans are laid.
Resolutions of responsibility and reconciliation.
Energy and ingenuity in equal amounts.

Time has length and elasticity.
Pliant, forgiving and fresh.
It is January first.
